Trump’s China Trip Should Have Accomplished More – Ken’s Thought of the Week

The public elements of the meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping went quite well. Their body language appeared friendly. Both tried to address a few problematic issues. China agreed that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons, that the Strait of Hormuz must not be militarized, and that it must stay open and free to all. China agreed not to sell man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) to Iran, but there was no explicit Chinese statement on stopping arms to Iran. China agreed to keep buying soybeans and other agricultural products from the US, as well as to buy 200 Boeing airplanes. The US agreed that Taiwan should not be an independent state, as is the current policy. President Trump brought up the tragic imprisonment of Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lai, but no resolution was announced. Each leader sought a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability”.

On the negative side, President Xi reiterated that the situation with Taiwan is “extremely dangerous” and “the most important issue”, and that of the future of China-US relations,  depends on resolving the Taiwan issue. However, there was no resolution of the US Taiwan policy. So, the status quo seems to remain, for now, though President Trump said that he does not want “to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war”.

We at Save The West have no knowledge of what was discussed in private, but we guess and hope that the following issues were reviewed:

1) China ends its war on America, which started in 1949.

2) China will continue to sell rare earth elements to America.

3) America will allow China to buy high-technology chips, except for the most advanced versions.

4) China must stop persecuting some 100 million Christians and Uyghurs and allow freedom of religion.

5) China should stop selling all weapons and equipment to Iran.

6) China must end its state of war with Taiwan, as Taiwan has never been part of China. The Taiwanese do not want to be part of China, particularly after witnessing China renege on its promise to maintain Hong Kong’s autonomy. Any attack on Taiwan will be regarded as an attack on America.

7) China must sell all the land that it purchased in America, or else America will confiscate it.

8) China must close all Confucius Institutes in American high schools and university campuses.

9) China must close its illegal police stations in the US, stop monitoring and spying on Chinese immigrants, and stop funding of US NGOs.

10) China should release Jimmy Lai as a sign of goodwill.

The spectacle of President Trump’s visit to Beijing was impressive, but any specific, concrete details of agreements have yet to be disclosed.
